LICENTIATE IN THEOLOGY

On-Campus OR Online


Purpose

 The Licentiate divinity program is designed for individuals preparing for pastoral ministry in an Anglican context.


Structure

The program consists of 30 courses (plus concurrent field education), and may be completed in three academic years. The curriculum is divided into four subjects:


  1. Holy Scripture
  2. Sacred Theology
  3. Church History
  4. Pastoral Ministry


Requirements for Graduation

  • Pass a minimum of 30 courses
  • Complete Field Education placements concurrent with academic studies
  • Pass the oral Doctrine Exam
  • Pass the written English Bible Exam. 
  • Students are expected to attend Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, and Holy Communion services in the chapel during term.

     CHURCH HISTORY (4 courses)

  • History, I, II, III
  • Anglican History

     PASTORAL STUDIES (6 courses)

  • Pastoral Ministry
  • Preaching I, II
  • Evangelism
  • Liturgics
  • Anglican Ecclesiology and Polity


Individuals requiring shorter programs by their bishop may pursue one of the following:


Diploma in Theology (20 courses)

The Diploma in Theology program is the same as the LTh, except consists of 20 courses from the curriculum, but otherwise has the same requirements. It may be completed in two years. The 20 specific courses comprising a student’s program are determined in consultation with the student’s advisor with concurrence of the Dean, but generally does not include Biblical languages.  Note that Field education, Doctrine Exam, English Bible Exam, and chapel attendance requirements remain the same as the Licentiate.


Certificate in Christian Studies (10 courses)

The Certificate in Christian Studies program consists of 10 courses from the curriculum, and may be completed in one year. The 10 specific courses are chosen by the student in consultation with their advisor, but must include at least two courses from each department (Bible, Theology, History, and Pastoral). There is no field education requirement, nor Doctrine Exam or English Bible Exam. Attendance at chapel is encouraged.
